We want to do everything for all patients, just like we want to do everything for all our children.

The old-school thinking of ‘doctor knows best’ must cede to a new approach of partnership so that patients become their own advocates. We must shift the narrative in our heads to catch up with reality.

Encourage the heart and believe that when equipped with necessary resources, they will become their own advocates.

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

What the Future Holds for Us

A sense of impending doom cedes to arbitrage. When the mass is convinced of an impending doom, the entire nation barrels toward alienation, disaffection, despair, and violence.

Hope for better days ahead cedes to investment. When the mass is hopeful of better days ahead, the entire nation elevates toward unity, joy, constructive effort, and peace.

Elevating the Role of Patients

Alienation and disaffection drive despair and violence.

We need to abandon the narrative of ‘us vs. them’ and seek common ground as seekers and learners.

Increasingly we’ve been expecting patients to take charge of their access. It’s time our narrative catches up to reality.

Afterall, who are we to elevate them if they’re expected to take on majority of the painful work to heal themselves.?

The new ‘modern’ is an era of divine relationship: ‘the other is not another but my divine brother.’

What is the point of our work? The whole reason for this shooting match is to create a context for deep and meaningful relationships. Relationships bring richness to life.

Deaths of despair, unhealthy and frustrated patients, and a fed-up workforce are all signs that our system might be prospering but is certainly not progressing.

Where Are We Going?

What kind of health care system do you wish you were handed?

Even though we didn’t get it, we get 40 years to work toward a legacy that benefits our next generation.

Despite ample resources, we lack direction. No wonder this place is ridden with slow pace of execution, avoidance of hard decisions, passive aggression, committee-led disempowerment, and unwillingness of leadership to roll up their sleeves. Without a clear direction, we continue to settle for what we have.

With a clear direction, however, the immovable object will meet an unstoppable force.

I’m convinced that regulations, rather than offering well-intended direction, often result in rage and guileful escapes. I’m also convinced that an outlook of devotion toward our work can provide a singular direction, accountability, care, and pride which are all required for the forward action that we crave.

What Should It Look Like?

You’ve figured out what’s wrong, but have you figured out how it should be?

If you don’t, someone else will for you.

When you focus on problems, you get more problems. When you focus on possibilities, you have more opportunities.

Where Are We Going?

Humans, just like the rest of the Universe, always figure out how to fill it up.

We’ve always figured out what to do with the time that isn’t filled up and the budget that isn’t spent.

So perhaps more important than how much time or budget we’ve been rewarded is asking what we intend to do with it and where we are headed.
